Ragnarok
In Nordic Mythology the world ends when the son of Loki, the gigant wolf Fenrir breaks free from his chains and swallows the Sun. This event is known as Ragnarok which translate as “ Fate of the Gods”
Between the 8th and the 12th century Christianity replaces the old believe system of of the Nordic people and the Sun becomes the Son.
This happens in a relatively smooth transition where many customs, traditions and rituals of the old way of life is maintained. Some historians have suggested that the concept of Divine Privileges was introduced to our western way of life in that transition. I doubt that was necessary.
Regardless, 1000 years later we are still looking for the Sun and we still go to war and kill one-another while politicians and television blame religion.
About the Rings:
-Fragments of chain links
-“The Great Unifiers” of history killing their brothers and cousins to secure their positions and thrones.
-“Death Before Dishonor” A Chichimec Indian clubbing his child in order to spare her from a life of slavery. This image was lifted from “Collective Suicide” painted in 1936 (with stencils and industrial grade enamel) by Mexican artist and Freedom Fighter David Alfaro Siqueiros.
-As we move out General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, South Vietnamese Chief of National Police is putting down a ‘’bad guy’’. These stencils are cut from a photograph by American Photographer Eddie Adams.
-At this point in the painting process things were spinning out of control and I needed a little positivity so I ran a circle of (Christmas looking) angels to shine a little light on this situation.
-Finally seven monks praying very hard to change some external circumstances. It is also possible these are Vietnamese monks protesting war.
-The Lotus peddles adding a Ying touch to the painting, Black Chains for our collective karma and responsibility. Gold chain Representing our good karma tying us to the material world.
